the maquette
FALL 2022
Mumbai, India
The 2022 Tectonics & Stereonomics project, The Structural Maquette, challenged my knowledge and understanding of structural systems. Given the structural plans and sections of the Palmyra House, located in Mumbai, India, I was instructed to build the structure out of balsa wood, and develop three “skins” for the exterior of the building.
The Palmyra House is located in a tranquil natural environment, away from the busy city. The buildings were constructed simplistically using materials that blend into the surroundings to achieve a natural look. The architect’s idea was to create a residential space that provided an escape from the bustle of the city and promoted a calm and peaceful environment. After carefully following the building diagrams and constructing the beams and girders, I decided on the materials for the skins. Due to the architect’s intent to create a building that coexists with the natural environment, I chose all natural materials for my skins, including leaves, sticks and pine needles. After constructing, I utilized light to accentuate the characteristics my skins provided to the space such as shadow. The Maquette, being one of my favorite projects, challenged my skills in accuracy while pushing me to think creatively and meaningfully while designing.
